What is the Smart Power Management System?
The Smart Power Management System assists the crane when accelerating. The system draws the energy needed to start the movement from UltraCaps. The braking energy released during vertical motion can be reused to drive the crane.
The connection capacity of a crane is partly determined by the energy required for the crane to start its movement. A standard automatic lifting crane is fused at 63 amps. As high connection values are very expensive and it is debatable whether such connection values will remain available at all in the future, a sustainable solution was considered.
SPM as a solution
By installing UltraCaps, the crane can be fused at 32 amps. The braking energy released during vertical motion is no longer dissipated by heat, but can be reused to drive the crane. As this stacker crane consumes 16 amps, the remaining energy can be returned to the grid.
An UltraCap is similar to a standard battery, but with the distinctive difference of a fast charge and discharge time. A standard battery does not have the ability to store and provide a lot of energy in a short period of time. Also, an UltraCap can be quickly and repeatedly charged and discharged.
Because inactive UltraCaps lose their charge, they will be recharged during standstill. Where automatic cranes are concerned, the information regarding being operational or in standstill mode is known and recharging can take place. In this way, the required charging time is minimised.
